Who We Are

Wake chapter is a local HLAA chapter serving Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and all other residents living in what's referred to as the Triangle.  We are volunteers interested in improving our lives and the lives of everyone with hearing loss.  Our program meetings are both in-person and virtual, via Zoom, and anyone is welcome attend. Please email steve.barber@earthlink.net to be added to the membership email list (it's free, and you can be removed anytime).  Members receive our occasional newsletters plus invitations to participate in meetings or events. There are no dues and no requirement to attend meetings.  You are welcome to join our Wake Chapter Facebook Group, too.  There, you’ll be able to keep up with (and post to the group, if you wish) timely and interesting information about hearing loss.

What We Do

The mission of HLAA is to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support, and advocacy.  Our chapter's newsletters provide useful information about hearing loss.  Our meetings and events offer opportunities to meet others and learn about “being good at hearing loss.”  Wake chapter participates in health fairs and supports other community events and nonprofits that benefit people with hearing loss.  We also provide post-secondary scholarships for area students with hearing loss.  We help organize and participate in the NC Walk4Hearing, an annual awareness and fundraising event, that brings together families and friends (and pets!) to advocate for people with hearing loss.

What You Can Do

Participation in HLAA Wake Chapter can add value to your life and to the community.

  • Meet new friends who understand.

  • Attend Wake Chapter meetings either physically or virtually via Zoom.

  • Learn how to make the most of your hearing by sharing experiences about hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive technology, and strategies.

  • Help others with hearing loss.

  • Support the community.

  • Advocate for the interests of everyone with hearing loss.

Program Meetings/Events

HLAA Wake Chapter holds program meetings and social events several times a year.  Most program meetings can be attended in-person or remotely via Zoom.

An audioloop is provided at program meetings so people with telecoil equipped hearing aids or cochlear implants can hear the audio as well as possible.  Telecoil compatible receivers/headphones are available for those without telecoil equipped hearing devices.  Captions of everything said at program meetings are displayed for all attendees.
