Hearing Loss Association of North Carolina

Welcome to Central North Carolina

Chapel Hill is in the "Research Triangle" near Raleigh and Durham. There are wonderful facilities and things to do in the area. You might want to combine the Focus on Hearing Conference with a get-away to enjoy some of the attractions. Check out the hotels, restaruants, events and things to see in the Triangle area.

Chapel Hill is only a few hours from the mountains to the west and the sea shore to the east, so we'll also cover some interesting side trips you might want to consider for before or after the conference.

In addition to our suggestions below, Matt Barrett's "North Carolina Guide" provides a useful and entertaining look at all the wonderful things you might consider while you're here.

The following is a list of some of the hotels in the area. We've listed some where we've blocked in a limited number of rooms and several others in the vicinity at which we don't have blocked rooms, but they may suit your needs. Chapel Hill Attractions

There's plenty to do in Chapel Hill. Some of the key attractions include:

You can also check out these other links to local things of interest:

Other Area Attractions

The centrally located Research Triangle area is bounded by Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Inside or nearby are other places that would be perfect for a side trip.

Ashboro is not far from Chapel Hill on Route 64. This link is not for the city but its main attraction, the North Carolina Zoo.

Burlington is only a few minutes west of Chapel Hill on Route 40. Here's a link to the Burlington web site and to their Things To Do" page.

Durham is only about 10 miles from Chapel Hill and is known as the "City of Medicine". It's also home to Duke University. You may also find its Tourism Web Site interesting.

The Greensboro visitors' site lists several things of interest in that city. Not on that web site, is one of the most interesting (if you are interested in china, crystal, silver, and collectables) is Replacements, Ltd., which offers a wonderful showroom and tours of the facility.

Hillsborough is small town about 30 minutes north of Chapel Hill. It has a rich history and dates back to the America Revolution.

TheVillage of Pinehurst is small town about an hour and 20 minutes from Chapel Hill. Its main attraction is Pinehurst, the world famous golf resort.

Raleigh is the State Capitol and has a wealth of attractions. Here's a list of Things to do in Raleigh. You might also enjoy the State Fair grounds (always something going on there) or the State Farmer's Market (Checkout the seafood restaurant; great prices; great food; spartan atmosphere).

The Seagrove area is famous for it's pottery. It's about an hour and a half from Chapel Hill. If you're "into" pottery, it's a great side-trip.

Winston-Salem is about 1.5 hours west of Chapel Hill on Route 40. That web site identifies many attractions, but one, in particular, is noteworthy (and inexplicably difficult to find on the main web site) so I've provided a like to Old Salem, here.

Friday Center Location

The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education is located at 100 Friday Center Drive in Chapel Hill. That's about a half mile from the intersection of 54 and Rt 40. See the map below, or see and interact with a map from Mapquest if you need more information.

Travel

If you are arriving by air, this link provides information about ground transportation from Raleigh-Durham Airport

If you are arriving by car, then you will most likely be arriving on Rt 40. Leave Rt 40 at exit 273, and travel Southwest on Rt 54 for approximately 2 miles. Turn left onto Friday Center Drive. The center is about 500 yards down Friday Center Drive.

Restaurants

Your registration (for Saturday) includes the "Celebration" lunch at the Friday Center on Saturday, that should be great, so don't miss that. The Friday Center also offers a superb lunch buffet on weekdays which you may add when you fill in our registration form.

If you prefer lunch or dinner at a nearby restaurant, there are several listed here.

Meadowmont is a small shopping area about 1/2 mile from the Friday Center. It probably best to drive if you choose to go there. There are several restaurants there including:

  • LaRussas- (Italian and deli)
  • Azure Grill (CA and French)
  • Cafe Carolina (salad, sandwiches, soups, light fare variety)
  • Brixx Pizza
  • Lickety Split
  • B Christopher's (nice place/good food-tablecloths etc. and relatively quiet)
  • Bean Traders Coffee - (some very light fare but not really a restaurant).

If you have more time, whether your tastes run to North Carolina Pit Cooked BarBQ, or to the best in new American or Continental quisine, there are plenty of restaurants for you in the Chapel Hill area. This link, provides a pretty comprehensive list, sorted by popularity.

Matt Barrett's Favorite Restaurants in the Chapel Hill area. His restaurant reviews are entertaining, sound like they are "from the heart" and may help you find a gem.

Churches in the Chapel Hill Area

There are many churches in the Chapel Hill area. That link provides a good list and a map.

Mountain Side Trips

It's not a long drive to the mountains from Chapel Hill. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs from the western end of North Carolina in the Great Smokey Mountains (about 5 hours from Chapel Hill) up to near Mount Airy (about 2 hours from Chapel Hill). These links can give you a start at planning a side trip to the mountains.

Seashore Side Trips

Prefer the ocean? No problem. Chapel Hill is only 3-4 hours from Wilmington, Morehead City or Beaufort. A little further and you can enjoy the pristine beauty of Outer Banks.
