Carolyn J. Brown has served since 1993 as Program Director for the Pediatric Cochlear Implant Team and the Carolina Children's Communicative Disorders Program (CCCDP) at the University of North Carolina's Neurosciences Hospital, and as Clinical Instructor in the UNC Department of Otolaryngology.
An internationally recognized authority on cochlear implants and on the auditory-based approach associated with rapidly advancing technologies, Carolyn Brown served on the team that first developed cochlear implant technology 20 years ago under William F. House, MD. Since she came to UNC, the program has implanted more than 300 children. The CCCDP (Financial Assistance Program) has supported more than 900 NC children who are deaf and hard of hearing since 1993.
Carolyn has been instrumental in building a model state-wide network of clinical and teaching professionals prepared to work with children who are developing spoken language with cochlear implants. Carolyn Brown has lectured widely in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. She continues to be a co-investigator in numerous research studies and clinical trials associated with the development of the field.
